Summary

Goal Zero has recalled approximately 10,000 Sherpa brand 50 and 120 rechargeable battery packs because they can overcharge and overheat. There have been three reports of property damage, including one fire, and one consumer reported becoming ill from breathing fumes. These silver and black lithium-ion packs were sold at REI, sporting goods stores, Amazon.com, and GoalZero.com between March 2010 and November 2013. Consumers should immediately stop using these packs and contact Goal Zero for a free replacement.

Risk

The battery packs can overcharge, bulge, and melt their enclosure. This creates a fire hazard and a risk of property damage or injury from inhaling toxic fumes if the battery overheats.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the side of your Goal Zero battery pack to see if it is a Sherpa 50 or Sherpa 120 model.
  2. Locate the serial number on the opposite side of the battery pack. Affected units have serial numbers beginning with S/N 11002 or S/N 11102.
  3. Verify if your Sherpa 50 is excluded; units with serial numbers starting with S50 are not part of this recall.
  4. Immediately stop using the recalled battery pack and disconnect it from any power sources or devices.
  5. Contact Goal Zero toll-free at 877-897-3193 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. MT Monday through Friday to receive a free replacement battery pack.
  6. Visit www.goalzero.com and click on 'Product Notifications' for additional information regarding the replacement process.
  7. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have further questions or need to report an incident.
