Gerber Recalls Instant Knife Due to Laceration Hazard

Summary

Gerber is recalling approximately 3,000 Instant knives because the locking mechanism on the spring-assisted blade can fail. This defect can cause the blade to fold unexpectedly during use, posing a serious risk of cuts. The recalled products were sold at sporting goods stores nationwide between February 2012 and March 2012 for about $50. No injuries have been reported to date, but consumers should stop using these knives immediately and contact Gerber for a free replacement.

Risk

The internal lock that is supposed to keep the blade open can fail to engage properly. If this happens during use, the blade may collapse back into the handle, potentially cutting the user's hand or fingers.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify your knife by checking the handle and blade. The recalled Instant knife has a black handle with four diagonal slots on each side and a black 3.18-inch retractable blade.
  2. Check your original packaging for model numbers 30-000435 (sold in a box) or 31-001101 (sold in a blister pack) located underneath the barcode. Note that these numbers are not printed on the knife itself.
  3. Look for the Gerber 'sword and shield' trademark in silver on one side of the blade near the handle, and the name 'Gerber®' in silver on the pocket clip.
  4. Immediately stop using any recalled Instant knives to prevent injury.
  5. Contact Gerber Legendary Blades toll-free at (877) 314-9130 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday, or visit www.gerbergear.com to receive a free replacement knife.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
