2018-2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Recalled for Air Bag Rupture

Summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 2,819 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks because the roof rail air bag inflator may rupture or have an end cap detach. This defect can occur in certain 2018-2019 models and could cause metal fragments or compressed gas to enter the vehicle's cabin. Dealers will replace both the left and right-side roof rail air bag modules free of charge to resolve this safety issue.

Risk

If the air bag inflator ruptures or the end cap detaches, metal fragments or the end cap itself can be projected into the vehicle at high speeds. This significantly increases the risk of serious injury to the driver and passengers.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website (www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) to confirm if your specific truck is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a Chevrolet dealer at 1-800-222-1020 or a GMC dealer at 1-888-988-7267 to schedule a free replacement of the left and right-side roof rail air bag (RRAB) modules.
  3. Provide the dealer with GM's internal recall number for this issue, which is N262549710.
  4. Call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information.
