Kia America, Inc. is recalling approximately 250,547 of its 2021-2024 Kia K5 vehicles because of a defect that can cause the fuel tank to melt. A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing the tank to expand until it touches hot exhaust components. To fix this issue, dealers will replace the check valve and inspect the fuel tank for any damage, replacing the tank itself if necessary, at no cost to owners.
If the fuel tank melts and leaks gasoline near hot exhaust parts, there is a significantly increased risk of a vehicle fire.
Check valve replacement and fuel tank inspection.
