Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.: Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport Recalled for Failing Passenger Air Bags

Summary

Volkswagen is recalling approximately 143,053 vehicles, including 2018-2021 Atlas and 2020 Atlas Cross Sport models. These vehicles have a fault in the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) wiring that can cause the front passenger air bag to deactivate even when someone is sitting in the seat. Dealers will replace the sensor mat and wiring harness in the passenger seat free of charge to ensure the safety system works correctly.

Risk

If the detection system fails, the front passenger air bag may not deploy during a collision. This failure to deploy significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death for the passenger during a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your VIN for the following models: 2018-2021 Volkswagen Atlas or 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
  2. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer to schedule a free repair; dealers will replace the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) sensor mat and wiring harness.
  3. If you have additional questions, contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 69FB.
  4. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
