Summary

Toyota is recalling approximately 750,795 vehicles, including 2020-2023 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models. During normal driving, even a minor impact to the front lower bumper cover can cause the assembly to become loose or completely detach from the vehicle. If the bumper cover falls off while the vehicle is in motion, it creates an immediate hazard for other drivers and increases the risk of a crash. Toyota dealers will inspect and secure or replace the upper and lower front bumper covers as needed at no cost to owners.

Risk

A bumper cover that detaches while driving becomes a significant road hazard, potentially striking other vehicles or forcing drivers to make sudden, dangerous maneuvers to avoid it, which increases the risk of a collision.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle registration or VIN to see if you own a 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023 Toyota Highlander or Highlander Hybrid.
  2. Visually inspect the front lower bumper cover for any signs of looseness, gaps, or damage, especially if the vehicle has experienced any minor impacts recently.
  3. Contact an authorized Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair; dealers will replace the mounting hardware and potentially the upper and lower bumper covers to ensure they are properly secured.
  4. If you have questions, contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and reference Toyota recall number 23TB12 or 23TA12.
  5. For further assistance, call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
