Fox Factory Recalls Mountain Bike Shock Absorbers Due to Fall and Injury Hazards

Summary

Fox Factory is recalling about 6,100 FLOAT X2 mountain bike rear shock absorbers (plus an additional 1,200 sold in Canada). These shocks were sold individually and installed as original equipment on high-end full-suspension mountain bikes from 16 different brands, including Trek, Giant, and Specialized. The recall was initiated because the shock's outer sleeve can rupture during use. There have been seven reports of these sleeves rupturing, though no injuries have been reported to date. Consumers should stop using bikes equipped with these shocks immediately and return them for a free repair.

Risk

The rear shock absorber's outer sleeve can suddenly burst or rupture while riding. This allows the broken sleeve to strike the rider or jam against other bicycle parts, which can cause the rider to lose control and crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using any bicycle equipped with the affected FLOAT X2 rear shock absorbers.
  2. Check your shock for the 'FLOAT X2' name printed on the external reservoir and look for 'X2' and 'RVS' laser-etched on the blue and red adjusters.
  3. Inspect the outer sleeve directly under the air fill boss; if the shock does NOT have a '250 psi max' label in this location, it is included in the recall.
  4. Identify if your bike is a model year 2016 or 2017 from brands including YT, Giant, Pivot, Intense, Ibis, Scott, Trek, GT, Knolly, Norco, Rocky Mountain, Diamondback, Morpheus, Foes Racing, Orbea, or Canyon.
  5. Return the affected bicycle or individual shock absorber to the place of purchase for a free repair. If you are unable to return it to the store, contact Fox Factory for instructions on receiving the free repair.
  6. Contact Fox Factory toll-free at 855-360-3488 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or by email at recall@ridefox.com.
  7. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for additional questions regarding this recall.
