Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1,392,935 model year 2015-2017 F-150 pickup trucks because of a technical defect that can cause the vehicle to suddenly shift into second gear while driving. This issue is caused by a loss of communication between the transmission sensor and the engine's control module. Ford dealers will provide a free software update to the powertrain control module to resolve the issue. Owners will receive an initial notification letter in late April 2026, followed by a second letter once the repair is ready in July 2026.

Risk

A sudden and unexpected downshift into second gear can cause the vehicle to slow down abruptly or lose traction, which may lead to a loss of vehicle control and an increased risk of a crash. No injuries or accidents have been reported at this time.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on NHTSA.gov to see if your truck is included in this recall; VINs became searchable on April 15, 2026.
  2. Watch for a notification letter from Ford Motor Company starting in late April 2026, which will explain the safety risk.
  3. Once the final software remedy is available (anticipated in July 2026), contact a Ford dealer to schedule a free appointment to have your powertrain control module software updated.
  4. If you have questions, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 26S28.
  5. For additional information, call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
