Fisher-Price Recalls to Inspect Rock 'N Play Infant Sleepers Due to Risk of Exposure to Mold

Summary

Fisher-Price is recalling approximately 800,000 Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleepers because mold can grow between the removable seat cushion and the hard plastic frame if it remains damp or is not cleaned regularly. While mold is not present at the time of purchase, it can develop after use and has been reported in 600 instances. Sixteen infants have reportedly been treated for respiratory issues, coughs, and hives after using the sleeper. These products were sold at mass merchandise stores and online from September 2009 for between $50 and $85.

Risk

Mold growth on the sleeper frame can expose infants to fungal spores, which are associated with respiratory illnesses, infections, persistent coughs, and hives. This risk is particularly high when moisture is trapped under the seat cushion or the product is infrequently cleaned.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately check your Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper by lifting the removable seat cushion to inspect the hard plastic frame for mold.
  2. Look for dark brown, gray, or black spots on the frame or the underside of the cushion which indicate the presence of mold.
  3. If you find any mold, stop using the product immediately and contact Fisher-Price for cleaning instructions or further assistance.
  4. Review cleaning and care instructions for the sleeper at www.service.mattel.com to prevent future mold growth.
  5. Contact Fisher-Price at 800-432-5437 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit their website for more information.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions or safety concerns.
