Spartan Fire, LLC: Fire Truck Water Pump May Fail to Activate After Reversing

Summary

Spartan Fire, LLC is recalling 166 firetrucks, including 2022-2024 Gladiator, Metro Star, FC-94, and KME Panther models. The transmission control module (TCM) in these vehicles may fail to achieve the 4th gear lockup required to start the water pump after the vehicle has been shifted into reverse. Dealers will provide a free software update for the transmission control module to resolve this issue.

Risk

If a firetruck is unable to pump water, it significantly increases the risk of injury or property damage during an active fire emergency. The defect specifically prevents the necessary gear lockup needed to initiate the fire suppression system.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your fleet records to determine if you own any 2022-2024 Spartan Gladiator, Metro Star, FC-94, or KME Panther firetrucks.
  2. If your vehicle is affected, contact Spartan Fire customer service at 1-517-543-6400 to schedule a free appointment for a transmission control module (TCM) software update. Reference Spartan Fire recall number 23007.
  3. If you have additional questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
