Summary

Allison Transmission, Inc. (ATI) is recalling 584 Emergency Vehicle Series 6th Generation Transmission Control Modules (TCM) used in fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. The affected modules may fail to achieve the 4th gear transmission lockup required to activate the vehicle's water pump. Vehicle manufacturers will update the software for these modules free of charge to ensure the pump initiates correctly.

Risk

If the transmission fails to lock into 4th gear, the vehicle cannot complete the sequence needed to pump water during an emergency. This failure to deliver water during fire suppression activities increases the risk of injury to both emergency responders and the public.

What You Should Do

  1. Contact your vehicle manufacturer or an authorized Allison Transmission service center to determine if your specific emergency vehicle is equipped with an affected 6th Generation Transmission Control Module.
  2. If your vehicle is affected, arrange for a service appointment to have the Transmission Control Module (TCM) software updated free of charge.
  3. You may contact Allison Transmission (ATI) customer service directly at 1-317-242-5000 for assistance or to find a service location.
  4. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information regarding recall 23E056.
