Approximately 70 bags of Sandhills Select Horse Feed (50 lb bags) are being recalled because a sample found the presence of Monensin. Monensin is a medication used in cattle and poultry feed that is highly toxic to horses and can be fatal even in small amounts. The affected products were sold exclusively at the Farmers Ranchers Coop Assn retail store in Ainsworth, Nebraska, starting around October 2, 2017. Consumers should return any remaining bags to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Risk

Monensin is toxic to horses; ingestion can cause permanent heart damage, rapid heart rate, breathing difficulties, muscle weakness, and death. There is no known antidote for monensin poisoning in horses.
