PACCAR Incorporated: Exterior Lighting Switch Failure/FMVSS 101 & 108

Summary

PACCAR Incorporated is recalling approximately 5,378 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks because the exterior lighting switch can fail. This defect prevents the hazard lights from working and stops drivers from adjusting the brightness of the instrument panel display. PACCAR dealers will provide a free software update for the vehicle cab controller unit (VECU) to fix the issue.

Risk

If the hazard lights fail, the vehicle cannot alert other drivers to a problem or emergency. Additionally, an unadjustable instrument panel may become too dim to see critical safety information or too bright and distract the driver, both of which increase the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your truck is one of the affected models: 2025 Kenworth T180, Peterbilt 535, 567; 2025-2026 Kenworth T280; 2023-2026 Kenworth T380; or 2024-2026 Kenworth T480, Peterbilt 536, 537, and 548.
  2. If the switch becomes non-responsive, you can temporarily reset it by performing a key cycle (turning the ignition off and then back on).
  3. Contact an authorized Kenworth or Peterbilt dealer to schedule a free update for the vehicle cab controller unit (VECU) software.
  4. For further assistance, contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 or Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220, referencing recall numbers 25KWB or 25PBB.
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
