Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 199,674 vehicles including various 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, X3, X4, Z4 models, and Toyota Supras. The engine starter relay in these vehicles may corrode, causing it to overheat and short circuit. This defect can lead to an electrical fire even while the vehicle is parked. Dealers will replace the engine starter assembly at no cost to owners.

Risk

A short circuit in the starter relay increases the risk of a vehicle fire. Because this issue can occur while the vehicle is stationary, owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the repair is performed.
