Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 85,238 Explorer vehicles from model years 2020 through 2022 that are equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility Package. A defect in the engine can cause oil and fuel vapor to leak and accumulate near hot exhaust or engine parts, which may lead to a fire in the engine compartment. Dealers will update the engine software and inspect for bearing failure, replacing the engine block for free if necessary.

Risk

If the engine fails, released fluids and vapors can ignite upon contact with hot engine components, causing a fire that increases the risk of injury to occupants and bystanders.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2020-2022 Ford Explorer equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility Package.
  2. Pay close attention to your vehicle's performance: if you hear unexpected engine noises, feel a sudden reduction in engine power, or see smoke coming from the hood, park the vehicle and shut off the engine as promptly and safely as possible.
  3. Contact a Ford dealer to schedule a free repair; technicians will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software and inspect the engine for connecting rod bearing failure.
  4. If the inspection reveals bearing failure, the dealer will replace the engine long block at no cost to you.
  5. For further information or to confirm your vehicle's involvement, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 24S52.
  6. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more details.
