Chrysler (FCA US, LLC): Jeep Cherokee Recalled for Power Liftgate Electrical Short and Fire Risk

Summary

Chrysler is recalling approximately 132,099 of its 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short can occur within the power liftgate module, which could cause the vehicle to catch fire regardless of whether the ignition is on or off. This recall replaces previous attempts to fix the issue, and owners who had their vehicles repaired under prior recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826 must have this new repair performed.

Risk

The power liftgate module can experience an electrical short-circuit, leading to a vehicle fire while the car is driving or parked. Because the fire can start while the vehicle is parked and the engine is off, it poses a significant risk to nearby structures and occupants.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage or near your home due to the risk of fire.
  2. Check if your vehicle is a 2014, 2015, or 2016 Jeep Cherokee equipped with the power liftgate option.
  3. Contact a Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) dealer to schedule a free repair; dealers will relocate the power liftgate module, add a water shield, and inspect for corrosion to replace necessary electrical connectors.
  4. If you have questions regarding this recall (number 49A), contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
