Kia America, Inc.: 2017-2018 Kia Niro Hybrid Recalled for Electrical Resistance and Fire Risk

Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling 27,030 of its 2017-2018 Kia Niro hybrid electric vehicles because of a defect in the Power Relay Assembly. The Main Relay within this assembly can have poor electrical connections, causing resistance that leads to overheating in the rear seat area. This recall includes vehicles that were previously repaired under a 2018 recall for the same issue, as those vehicles now require a new remedy. Kia dealers will inspect the assembly and replace either the entire unit or the Main Relay at no cost to the owner.

Risk

The inadequate connections in the Main Relay cause electrical resistance that can generate excessive heat. This heat can cause the rear seats to overheat, significantly increasing the risk of a vehicle fire.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is a 2017 or 2018 Kia Niro hybrid electric vehicle.
  2. Check your vehicle's identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or contact a Kia dealer to confirm if your specific car is part of recall SC256, even if it was previously repaired under recall 18V-666.
  3. Contact an authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free inspection of your vehicle's Power Relay Assembly (PRA).
  4. If the inspection reveals a faulty connection, the dealer will replace the PRA or the Main Relay free of charge.
  5. For further information or questions, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and mention recall number SC256.
  6. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
