Indian Motorcycle Company: Various Motorcycles Recalled Due to Headlight Electrical Failure

Summary

Indian Motorcycle Company is recalling 28,689 motorcycles across several model lines from 2014 to 2020. The electrical connection for the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) can fail, which may lead to a sudden loss of all front lighting, including the main headlight. Indian Motorcycle dealers will inspect the VCM and electrical connections, replacing components and updating software as needed to fix the issue.

Risk

A sudden loss of the headlight and other front lights significantly reduces the rider's visibility and makes the motorcycle less visible to other drivers, which increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your motorcycle is one of the following affected models: 2014 Chief, 2015 Chief Classic, 2014-2018 Chieftain, 2015-2020 Chief Vintage, 2016-2018 Chieftain Darkhorse, 2016-2020 Springfield, 2017-2018 Chieftain Limited, or 2018-2019 Chieftain Classic.
  2. Contact an authorized Indian Motorcycle dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair. Dealers will replace the electrical connection and Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and update the VCM software if necessary.
  3. If you have further questions, contact Indian Motorcycle customer service at 1-877-204-3697 and reference recall number I-19-02.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
