Summary

ECHO and Shindaiwa brand commercial backpack blowers and replacement shoulder straps are being recalled because parts can be sucked into the blower fan and ejected at high speeds. Approximately 67,700 blowers and 6,600 replacement straps are affected, with 62 reports of incidents including one minor neck injury from flying debris. These red and black gas-powered blowers were sold at Home Depot, Grainger, and independent dealers between August 2018 and February 2020. Consumers should stop using the blowers and contact an authorized dealer for a free repair.

Risk

The shoulder straps, plastic buckles, or the ground wire can be drawn into the blower's fan and housing, causing pieces of plastic to be expelled from the machine. This poses a serious risk of impact and laceration injuries to the user or bystanders.

What You Should Do

  1. Locate the model and serial numbers on the blower's engine block to see if your unit is affected; affected ECHO models include PB-8010H and PB-8010T, while Shindaiwa models include EB810 and EB810RT.
  2. Check replacement shoulder straps for part numbers C061000780, C061000781, C061000790, C061000791 (ECHO) or C061000861, C061000871 (Shindaiwa) printed on the original plastic packaging.
  3. Immediately stop using the recalled backpack blowers and contact an authorized ECHO or Shindaiwa dealer to schedule a free repair.
  4. Find your nearest ECHO dealer at www.echo-usa.com or call ECHO at 800-432-3246 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT Monday–Friday).
  5. Find your nearest Shindaiwa dealer at www.shindaiwa-usa.com or call Shindaiwa at 877-986-7783 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday–Friday).
  6. For more information, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
