Summary

Approximately 6,558 cases of E-Z Spuds Inc. fresh cut onion products, cilantro, parsley, and various other vegetables are being recalled due to potential contamination with Salmonella. The affected products were distributed to manufacturers and food service establishments in the Chicago, IL metro area between July and September 2021. Consumers and businesses should identify the specific produce types and manufacturing dates, ranging from July 14, 2021, to September 09, 2021, to determine if their stock is involved. Because these items were sold to food service providers, they may have been used as ingredients in prepared meals or processed further.

Risk

The products may be contaminated with Salmonella, a pathogen that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, but in rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses such as arterial infections and arthritis.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you have any of the affected fresh cut produce by checking for the specific manufacturing dates (Mfg Date) printed on the packaging, which range from July 14, 2021, to September 09, 2021.
  2. Check for recalled onion products (diced, sliced, julienne, or whole) with manufacturing dates between July 14 and September 9, 2021; green onions with dates including July 14, 15, 26, Aug 11, 16, 17, 19, 20, 23, Sept 1, 8, and 9; and 10# Cilantro or Parsley with dates like July 26, August 11, 16, or September 1.
  3. Verify other specific affected vegetables: 10# Butternut (Aug 10), 15# Collard Greens (Sept 1, 8), 25# Green Pepper (Aug 10), 30# Zucchini (Aug 10), 30# Garlic (July 26), and 10# or 30# Celery (Aug 10, Sept 1).
  4. Immediately stop using and dispose of any remaining products matching these descriptions and dates to prevent potential illness.
  5. If you are a manufacturer or food service establishment, notify any customers who may have received these products or finished goods made with these ingredients.
  6. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact E-Z Spuds Inc. for further instructions.
  7. For additional questions or to report an illness, contact the FDA Consumer Complaint coordinator at 1-888-723-3332 (1-888-SAFEFDA).
