BMW of North America is recalling 5,361 model year 2000-2001 X5 vehicles that may have an optional sport steering wheel containing a Takata PSDI-4 air bag inflator. Over time, exposure to high heat and humidity can cause the propellant inside the inflator to degrade, which may lead the inflator to explode during a crash. To fix this, BMW dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace the driver's side front air bag for free.
If the air bag inflator explodes during deployment, it can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other passengers, causing serious injury or death. Because of this critical risk, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed.
You have 2 options:
Inspection and replacement of the driver's front air bag.
Do Not Drive Warning
Affected vehicles contain a Takata PSDI-4 air bag inflator; this recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 19V015.
