Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing: Driver's Air Bag May Not Deploy/FMVSS 208

Summary

Toyota is recalling approximately 1,716 vehicles, including certain 2023 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Highlander, Tacoma, and Lexus RX/NX models, that may have been incorrectly fixed during a previous recall (23V-480). An electrical connection in the steering column's spiral cable may be poorly welded, causing it to separate and turn off the driver's air bag. Owners should take their vehicle to a Toyota or Lexus dealer to have the spiral cable assembly inspected and replaced for free.

Risk

If the internal electrical connection separates, the driver's air bag will be deactivated and will not deploy during a crash, significantly increasing the risk of serious injury. This defect also means the vehicles fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 for occupant crash protection.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's recall status by visiting nhtsa.gov/recalls or the Toyota/Lexus website using your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  2. Contact an authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer to schedule a free inspection and potential replacement of the spiral cable assembly.
  3. Dealers will inspect and replace the spiral cable assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 17, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 25TA02. Lexus' number for this recall is 25LA02.
  4. If you have further questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
