BCS Automotive Interface Solutions US, L: Steering Column Control Modules Recalled for Air Bag Deactivation

Summary

Approximately 80,206 steering column control modules (SCCM) manufactured by BCS Automotive Interface Solutions are being recalled because they contain electrical defects that can cause the driver’s air bag to deactivate. These components were installed in various vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company and Chrysler (Stellantis). Because the air bag may not deploy during an accident, these units fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208 for occupant crash protection. Vehicle manufacturers were notified of this issue on November 8, 2023, to begin the process of identifying affected vehicles and implementing a fix.

Risk

If the steering column control module fails, the driver's air bag will become deactivated. In the event of a crash, a deactivated air bag will not deploy as intended, which significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death to the driver.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle for any warning lights or malfunctions related to the steering column or air bag system.
  2. Verify if your vehicle is part of this recall by visiting www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  3. Contact your vehicle manufacturer or local dealership to determine if your specific Ford or Chrysler (Stellantis) vehicle is equipped with one of the 8,823 potentially defective steering column control modules.
  4. Follow all instructions provided by your vehicle manufacturer regarding the appropriate remedy, which will be determined by the individual car makers.
  5. For further information or assistance, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
