Summary

BMW is recalling approximately 1,145 vehicles across several model lines, including certain 2013-2015 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X3, and X5 models. The driver's front airbag inflator contains a manufacturing defect that can cause it to explode during deployment. Dealers will replace the affected airbag inflator with a new part free of charge to ensure occupant safety.

Risk

If the airbag deploys during a crash, the inflator may explode and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin. These fragments can strike the driver or other passengers, leading to serious injury or death.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if it is included in this recall. You can find your VIN on the driver's side dashboard or on your registration documents.
  2. Contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or visit an authorized BMW dealership to schedule a free replacement of the driver's front airbag inflator.
  3. Check your mail for an official owner notification letter, which BMW began mailing on September 6, 2024.
  4. For further information or to verify your vehicle's status, call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
