Summary

BMW is recalling approximately 394,029 vehicles, including 2006-2011 3 Series Sedans, 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagons, and 2009-2011 3 Series Diesel Sedans. This recall was issued because the original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel that contains an inflator prone to exploding during deployment. Owners should take their vehicle to an authorized dealer to have the driver's air bag module inspected and, if necessary, replaced for free.

Risk

If the air bag deploys during a crash, the inflator can explode and send sharp metal fragments flying toward the driver and other passengers. This mechanism of failure can cause serious internal injuries or death.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is one of the following models: 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), or 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d).
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free inspection of your driver's air bag module.
  3. If the dealer identifies a sport or M-sport steering wheel with an affected inflator, they will replace the air bag module free of charge.
  4. You may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information regarding this recall.
