Summary

BMW is recalling approximately 486 vehicles, including certain 2014-2015 X3, X4, and X5 SUVs, because the driver's front air bag inflator may explode when it deploys. This recall is due to a manufacturing defect in the inflator component. Owners of these specific vehicles should contact an authorized BMW dealer to have the driver's front air bag replaced entirely at no cost.

Risk

If the air bag inflator explodes during a crash, sharp metal fragments can be propelled toward the driver and other passengers. This poses a severe risk of serious injury or death from being struck by metal shrapnel.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's identification to see if it is one of the affected models: 2014 X3 xDrive28i, 2014 X3 xDrive35i, 2014 X5 sDrive35i, 2014 X5 xDrive35i, or 2015 X4 xDrive35i.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free replacement of the driver's front air bag.
