DR Power Equipment is recalling about 2,100 PRO XL501 Chipper Shredders because the internal fin scroll can fail and eject metal fragments from the hopper during use. The recalled units have an orange body and a black motor on a two-wheeled frame, with model numbers CS35050BEN or CS35050BENR printed on the side. The firm has received six reports of metal being ejected from the units, though no injuries have occurred. DR Power is providing free repair kits or dealer repairs for all affected units sold between September 2019 and September 2022.
A defect in the internal fin scroll can cause it to break apart during operation, throwing sharp metal pieces out of the chipper shredder's hopper. This poses a serious laceration risk to the operator and any bystanders.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chipper shredders. DR Power Equipment is contacting all known purchasers and automatically sending them a repair kit with installation instructions. Consumers will also be provided with a small sticker with letters "NF" to place on the unit's data tag to indicate that the scroll has been replaced. Consumers not wishing to make the repair themselves will be directed to a servicing dealer to make the free repair for them, including transportation to and from the dealer.
'DR' and 'PROXL501' are printed on the motor. Model number is on the side of the unit.
