Spartan Fire, LLC: Gladiator and Metro Star Fire Trucks Recalled for Delayed Braking

Summary

Spartan Fire, LLC is recalling 17 of its 2017-2019 Gladiator and 2018-2019 Metro Star fire trucks because the service brakes may take longer than expected to engage. This delay fails to meet federal safety standards for air brake systems and can result in the vehicle traveling further than intended after the driver applies the brakes. To resolve this issue, dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace plumbing, fittings, or the quick release valve at no cost to the owner.

Risk

A delay in brake engagement increases the distance required to stop the fire truck, significantly raising the risk of a crash during emergency or routine operation.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is an affected 2017-2019 Spartan Gladiator or 2018-2019 Spartan Metro Star fire truck.
  2. Contact Spartan Fire customer service at 1-517-543-6400 to schedule a free inspection and repair. Reference Spartan Fire recall number 24009.
  3. During the service appointment, dealers will inspect and either replace the brake fittings and plumbing or the quick release valve as necessary, free of charge.
  4. For additional information or to report concerns, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
