Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 5,118 of its 2022-2023 F-150 Lightning vehicles because the SYNC software may fail to activate the electronic stability control (ESC) system when the vehicle is started. Without this safety system active, these vehicles do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for stability control. Ford will provide a software update for the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) through a dealer visit or an over-the-air (OTA) update at no cost to owners.

Risk

The stability control system may remain deactivated without the driver's knowledge, which can lead to a loss of vehicle control and significantly increase the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your vehicle's identification number (VIN) against Ford's recall number 23C38 or NHTSA campaign number 23V801.
  2. Check your vehicle's infotainment system settings to see if an over-the-air (OTA) software update for the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) is available and install it if prompted.
  3. If you cannot perform an over-the-air update, contact a Ford dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the software updated manually.
  4. For further information or assistance, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 23C38.
  5. For additional questions, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
