2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD-6500HD Recalled for Brake Wiring Defect

Summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 891 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks (models 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD) from the 2019 and 2020 model years. These vehicles were previously repaired under a different recall, but the replacement brake wiring was installed without protective tape. Without this tape, the wires can rub or vibrate until they are damaged, which can cause the power brake assist system to fail. Dealers will remove the wiring harness, apply the missing protective tape, and reinstall it for free.

Risk

The damaged wiring can lead to a sudden loss of power brake assistance. If this happens, the driver will need significantly more physical force to stop the truck, which increases the distance needed to stop and raises the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. The recalled vehicles are 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD trucks that were previously repaired under NHTSA recall 25V390.
  2. Identify if your vehicle is included by searching your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  3. Contact an authorized Chevrolet dealer to schedule a free repair. The dealer will inspect the brake jumper wire harness, apply protective tape, and reinstall the harness.
  4. For further information, contact General Motors customer assistance at 1-866-467-9700 and mention GM recall number N252531990.
  5. Call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional safety information regarding this recall.
