Summary

Daikin Comfort Technologies is expanding its recall to include about 3,600 additional evaporator coil drain pans that were incorrectly labeled. The molded plastic drain pan can overheat, melt, and deform, which has resulted in 31 reported fires and one instance of smoke inhalation. Affected units were sold by independent dealers between January 2019 and November 2021 for between $200 and $1,200. Consumers should contact the manufacturer to register for a free repair by a qualified technician.

Risk

The plastic drain pan at the bottom of the evaporator coil can overheat and melt if installed in certain furnace configurations, posing a fire hazard. There have been reports of significant fire and smoke damage to homes resulting from this defect.

What You Should Do

  1. This recall expansion involves about 3,600 additional evaporator coil drain pans used with up-flow gas furnaces with serial number prefixes ranging from 1901 through 2101 or specific prefixes ranging from 1811-1812.
  2. Identify your unit by checking the serial number on the label located on the evaporator coil or its casing, which sits on top of the vertically installed furnace.
  3. Check the yellow 'Energy Guide' label on your furnace to find the brand and model number; the recall affects condensing furnaces of all brands and non-condensing furnaces from competitor brands (not Goodman, Daikin, or Amana).
