Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing: 2024 Toyota and Lexus SUVs Recalled for Air Bag Deployment Issues

Summary

Toyota is recalling approximately 145,254 vehicles, including 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Lexus TX350, TX500 Hybrid, and TX550 Hybrid+ models. The driver and passenger side curtain air bags in these SUVs may not unroll correctly during a crash and could partially deploy outside of an open window. This defect means the vehicles do not meet federal safety standards for occupant ejection mitigation. To fix this, dealers will replace both the driver and passenger curtain shield air bag assemblies at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the side curtain air bag deploys improperly or outside the window, it provides less protection to the driver and passengers during a crash, significantly increasing the risk of injury or ejection from the vehicle.

What You Should Do

  1. Confirm your vehicle is part of this recall by checking if you own a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander (gas or hybrid models) or a 2024 Lexus TX350, TX500 Hybrid, or TX550 Hybrid+.
  2. Contact an authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the driver and passenger side curtain shield air bag assemblies replaced.
  3. If you have already received a notification letter (mailed around November 4, 2024), refer to it for specific instructions, or call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 (mention recall numbers 24TB09/24TA09 for Toyota or 24LB05/24LA05 for Lexus).
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
