Chrysler (FCA US, LLC): Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee Recalled for Engine Stall Risk

Summary

Approximately 80,629 vehicles, including 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines, are being recalled. A component called the crankshaft position sensor tone wheel can wear down or separate, which prevents the engine from correctly timing fuel delivery and camshaft movement. This defect can cause the vehicle's engine to suddenly stall while driving, and dealers will provide a free software update to the powertrain control module to prevent the loss of propulsion.

Risk

If the crankshaft sensor fails, the engine may lose its ability to synchronize timing and fuel injection, leading to an immediate engine stall. A sudden loss of engine power while the vehicle is in motion significantly increases the risk of a crash.
