Summary

Cosco is recalling approximately 273,000 3-in-1 convertible aluminum hand trucks because the wheel hubs can burst or eject pieces during tire inflation. There have been 10 reports of wheel hubs breaking or separating, including four reports of consumers suffering bruises and lacerations. These products were sold at retailers including Ace Hardware, Costco, and Lowe's between March 2009 and October 2011 for about $100 to $150. Consumers should stop using the hand trucks and contact Cosco for a free repair kit.

Risk

The plastic wheel hubs can fail and break apart under pressure during tire inflation, causing pieces to be ejected at high speed. This poses a risk of impact injuries, cuts, and bruises to the user or anyone standing nearby.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the rear side of the bottom cross member for the Cosco label to identify the model and manufacture date.
  2. Verify if your hand truck is model number 12-301 ABL or 12-301 ABL1 with a manufacture date between January 2009 and October 2011.
  3. Immediately stop using any affected hand trucks until they have been repaired.
  4. Contact Cosco Home and Office Products for a free repair kit by calling (888) 250-9299 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, emailing handtruck@coscoproducts.com, or visiting www.coscoproducts.com and clicking on 'Safety Notice' at the top of the page.
