KENTUCKY TRAILER MANUFACTURING: XL-12 Trailers Recalled for Unintentional Winch Operation

Summary

Kentucky Trailer Manufacturing (KTM) is recalling 5 of its 2021-2022 Kentucky Trailer XL-12 trailers that are equipped with specific Warn Winches and wireless handheld remotes. Water can leak into these handheld remotes, causing the internal circuit boards to corrode and potentially triggering the winch to operate on its own without user input. Owners will be provided with instructions to inspect the remotes and can receive a water-resistant replacement remote from Warn Industries free of charge.

Risk

Corrosion on the remote's circuit board can cause the winch to activate unexpectedly. An unintended winch operation increases the risk of serious injury to anyone near the equipment or the trailer load.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your 2021-2022 Kentucky Trailer XL-12 is equipped with a Warn Winch and a wireless handheld remote.
  2. Immediately inspect the wireless remote for any signs of water intrusion or corrosion on the internal components.
  3. Disable the wireless function of the remote right away by removing its battery pack.
  4. If you find water or corrosion while removing the battery pack, stop using the remote immediately and contact Warn Industries customer service to arrange for a free replacement.
  5. Contact Kentucky Trailer Manufacturing (KTM) customer service at 1-502-637-2551 for specific inspection instructions or if you have questions about the recall.
  6. Contact Warn Industries customer service once new parts are available to receive a replacement water-resistant remote free of charge.
  7. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
