Daimler Trucks North America, LLC: Trucks Recalled for Corroded Brake Modulator Valves and Pulling Risk

Summary

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 219,390 vehicles, including various models of Freightliner Cascadia, Business Class M2, 114SD, and Western Star 49X, 47X, and 57X from model years 2017 through 2023. The front axle brake modulator valves may corrode, which can cause the vehicle to pull unexpectedly to one side when the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system applies the brakes. Dealers will inspect the valves and replace them if necessary, and some vehicles will receive a software update to alert the driver if a future replacement is needed.

Risk

Corroded valves can cause the brakes to apply unevenly during an automated braking event. This may result in a sudden change in the vehicle's direction, which increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is one of the following affected models: 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia, 2020-2022 Freightliner Business Class M2, 2022 Freightliner 114SD, 2020-2023 Western Star 49X, 2021-2023 Western Star 47X, or 2021-2022 Western Star 57X.
  2. Note that even if your vehicle was previously repaired under a prior recall (number 20V-390), you must have it serviced again under this new recall (FL-958) to ensure the issue is fully addressed.
  3. Contact an authorized Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) dealer to schedule a free inspection and potential replacement of the front brake modulator valves.
  4. For more information, contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 and reference recall number FL-958.
  5. If you have further questions, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
