Hyundai Motor America: 2021 Kona EV Vehicles Recalled for Coolant Leak and Loss of Drive Power

Summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling approximately 853 of its 2021 Kona EV vehicles because a component called the Electric Power Control Unit (EPCU) may have been improperly sealed. This defect can allow coolant to leak inside the unit and contact internal circuit boards, which can lead to a sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion. Owners will be notified to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for a free inspection and, if necessary, a full replacement of the EPCU.

Risk

If coolant leaks into the internal circuit board of the Electric Power Control Unit, it can cause an electrical short. This results in a sudden loss of propulsion, which significantly increases the risk of a crash, especially if it occurs at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking for the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV model year.
  2. Contact an authorized Hyundai dealer to schedule a free inspection of your vehicle's Electric Power Control Unit (EPCU).
  3. If the inspection reveals a leak or an improperly sealed unit, the dealer will replace the EPCU with a new part at no cost to you.
  4. If you have additional questions or need help finding a dealer, contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall number 239.
  5. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
