Summary

Clair D. Thompson & Sons, Inc. is recalling approximately 700 pounds of Thompson’s brand ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The affected beef was produced on September 27-28 and October 2, 2017, and sold in 5-lb. and 10-lb. plastic bags. While no illnesses have been confirmed, the problem was discovered after a third-party laboratory test returned a positive result for the bacteria.

Risk

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that causes dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. In some cases, particularly in young children and older adults, it can lead to a serious type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

What You Should Do

  1. Check your freezer for 5-lb. or 10-lb. plastic bags of Thompson’s GROUND BEEF produced on Sept. 27, Sept. 28, or Oct. 2, 2017.
  2. Verify the product is affected by looking for establishment number EST. 9681 inside the USDA mark of inspection on the label.
  3. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund, throw it away, or contact the manufacturer for further instructions.
  4. If you or a family member experience easy bruising, paleness, or decreased urine output after consuming ground beef, seek emergency medical care immediately.
  5. Always cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160° F as measured by a food thermometer to kill harmful bacteria.
  6. Call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 if you have additional food safety questions.
