General Motors, LLC: Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain Recalled for Child Seat Anchor Defect

Summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 668,187 vehicles, specifically 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and 2020-2023 GMC Terrain models, because the rear-seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars may have too much powder coating. This thick finish can prevent a child seat from being properly installed using the LATCH system, which fails to meet federal safety requirements. To resolve this, dealers will inspect the bars and remove the excessive finish as needed at no cost to the owner.

Risk

If a child seat cannot be properly installed with the LATCH anchorage bars, the seat may remain unsecured. An unsecured child seat significantly increases the risk of injury to a child in the event of a vehicle crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if you own a 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox or 2020-2023 GMC Terrain vehicle.
  2. Use the vehicle's rear seat belts to install and secure your child seat instead of the LATCH anchorage bars until the recall repair is finished.
  3. Contact a local Chevrolet or GMC dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair of the anchorage bar finish.
  4. If you have questions, contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and reference recall number N232403240.
  5. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
