Summary

Nantucket Distributing Co. is recalling about 2,000 Catalina Outdoor Fireplaces because the glass panels can break when a fire is lit. Christmas Tree Shops has received three reports of the glass components breaking, which creates a serious risk of fire spreading or users being cut by shards. These free-standing black metal and glass units were sold at Christmas Tree Shops retail locations between September 2011 and October 2012 for approximately $130. Consumers should immediately stop using the fireplace and return it to any Christmas Tree Shops store for a full refund.

Risk

The glass sides of the fireplace are prone to shattering when exposed to heat from a fire, potentially causing burns from escaping flames or lacerations from broken glass fragments. Three incidents of the glass breaking have already been reported.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify your unit by checking the instruction manual or the original packaging for model number CT840BL. The fireplace is approximately 30 inches tall with a 21 1/4-inch square base, short legs, and a square vented top lid.
  2. Immediately stop using the Catalina Outdoor Fireplace and ensure any current fire is completely extinguished and the unit is cool to the touch.
  3. Return the recalled fireplace to any Christmas Tree Shops retail location to receive a full refund.
  4. Contact Christmas Tree Shops toll-free at 888-287-3232 at any time, or visit www.christmastreeshops.com and click on 'Safety and Recalls' at the bottom of the page for more information.
  5. For further consumer safety questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
