Cascade Designs Recalls Avalanche Rescue Probes Due to Risk of Suffocation

Summary

Cascade Designs is recalling about 1,600 Mountain Safety Research (MSR) Striker™ 320 and Striker™ 240 avalanche rescue probes. The lock button on these probes can fail to engage, which prevents the probe from locking into its functional shape. This failure can interfere with the search for individuals buried under snow during an emergency. The probes were sold nationwide at REI and other outdoor recreation stores, as well as online at Amazon.com, from September 2014 through January 2016. No incidents or injuries have been reported, and consumers are entitled to a refund or a free replacement probe.

Risk

If the lock button fails to secure the shaft sections in place, the probe will not function as a single, rigid tool. This can significantly delay or prevent rescuers from locating someone buried beneath snow, leading to a risk of suffocation.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled Mountain Safety Research Striker 320 and Striker 240 avalanche rescue probes.
  2. Check your probe for the model name: 'Striker 320' is printed on red and gray probes, and 'Striker 240' is printed on yellow and gray probes. The brand 'MSR' is also printed on the shaft.
  3. Inspect the lock button at the end of the probe (the section closest to the handle) to see if it correctly engages and locks when the probe is deployed.
  4. Contact Cascade Designs at 800-531-9531 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday, or visit www.msrgear.com and click on 'Recall' for instructions on how to receive a full refund or a free replacement probe.
  5. For additional questions, call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
