Summary

Carrier has recalled about 285,000 Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) and Heat Pumps (PTHP) sold under the Bryant, Carrier, and Fast brand names. The power cord plug on these units can overheat, leading to potential fires. There have been 47 reports of overheating, including two hotel fires, and one incident where a consumer suffered burns and smoke inhalation. These units were sold by HVAC dealers and factory-direct sales between January 2002 and December 2009 for between $425 and $675.

Risk

The power cord plug can overheat and melt, which can cause scorched wall outlets or ignite a fire. This has already resulted in reported property damage and one injury involving burns and smoke inhalation.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your air conditioner or heat pump for the brand name (Carrier, Bryant, or Fast) and locate the model and serial numbers on the ratings plate behind the removable front panel on the right side of the unit.
  2. Verify if your unit is affected by checking for these specific model numbers: Carrier (52CE, 52CQ, 52PE, 52PQ), Bryant (840, 841), or Fast (840, 841).
  3. If your unit matches these models, immediately stop using it and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  4. Contact Carrier at 800-761-8492 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.carrier.com and click on 'Important Product Safety Recall' to verify your serial number and arrange for a free replacement power cord.
  5. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
