Summary

Carrier has recalled about 530 WeatherExpert 6-23 ton, 48/50 series, light commercial rooftop HVAC units equipped with a humidimizer dehumidification feature. The units were sold nationwide between March 2014 and September 2017. A defect in the control board can cause the humidimizer fan to stay on even if a connected smoke detector is triggered, which creates a fire hazard. One incident of a fan failing to shut off has been reported, though no injuries have occurred. Carrier is providing a free replacement and installation of the electronic control board for all affected units.

Risk

If a fire occurs and triggers a smoke detector, the HVAC fan may fail to shut off as intended, potentially spreading smoke or fueling a fire within a commercial or institutional building.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify your unit by checking the rating plate on the back of the device for model numbers starting with 48LC or 50LC (specifically 48/50LC07-26) that have an 'A' as the 6th digit and a '0' (zero) as the 14th digit (counting dashes).
  2. Verify the serial number on the rating plate falls between 1214P and 3317P.
  3. Immediately contact a Carrier dealer to schedule a free repair, which includes the replacement and installation of a new electronic control board.
  4. If you are a known purchaser, watch for direct communication from Carrier regarding this recall.
