Summary

Carrier is expanding a recall for about 94,000 Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) and Packaged Terminal Heat Pumps (PTHP) sold under the Bryant, Carrier, and Fast brand names. The power cord plug can overheat, posing a fire hazard, and there have been 14 reports of overheating incidents. These units were sold at HVAC dealers and through factory-direct sales between January 2002 and December 2009. Affected consumers should immediately stop using and unplug the units and contact Carrier for a free replacement cord.

Risk

The power cord plug on these units can overheat during operation, creating a risk of fire within the building. Carrier has received 14 additional reports of these plugs overheating, though no injuries have been reported in this specific expansion.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your unit to see if it is a Carrier (models 52CE, 52CQ, 52PE, 52PQ, 52PC, 52ME, 53MQ), Bryant (models 840, 841, 842), or Fast (models 840, 841, 842).
  2. Locate the ratings/data plate on the right front of the unit, underneath the removable front panel, to verify the model and serial number.
  3. Check the serial number against the complete list of affected units available at www.carrier.com or by calling Carrier directly.
  4. Immediately stop using and unplug any recalled units to eliminate the risk of the power cord overheating.
  5. Contact Carrier at 800-761-8492 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at www.carrier.com to receive a free replacement power cord.
  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
