Summary

Carrier Corporation has recalled approximately 23,300 Carrier Greenspeed and Bryant Evolution Extreme heat pumps used for home heating and cooling. The capacitors in the units' fuse boards can fail, causing the heat pump to overheat and pose a fire hazard. There have been 41 reports of units overheating, although no injuries or property damage have been reported at this time. These units were sold nationwide at Sears and through HVAC dealers between June 2011 and August 2016 for prices ranging from $12,000 to $18,000.

Risk

A defect in the fuse board's capacitors can cause the heat pump to overheat. This failure presents a significant fire hazard to the home.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the model number on your heat pump. It is located on the unit nameplate (rating plate) on the exterior side of the unit. Bryant units also have a 'Bryant Evolution System' label on the top.
  2. Verify if your Carrier Greenspeed model is affected: 25VNA024, 25VNA036, 25VNA048, or 25VNA060.
  3. Verify if your Bryant Evolution Extreme model is affected: 280ANV024, 280ANV036, 280ANV048, or 280ANV060.
  4. If your unit is affected, contact Carrier toll-free at 844-468-4301 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.carrier.com or www.bryant.com and click on 'Product Safety Recall' to schedule a free repair.

  6. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
