Summary

Cargill Inc. is recalling approximately 291,508 units of River Run and Marksman brand dog foods because they may contain elevated levels of aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by certain molds that can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. These products were distributed across 15 states and several international territories. Consumers should immediately stop feeding the recalled food to their pets and return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Risk

Aflatoxin can cause serious illness or death in pets if consumed in high amounts. The toxin can lead to liver damage, with symptoms including lethargy, vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or gums (jaundice), and loss of appetite.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your pet food packaging for the following brands: River Run Professional Formula 27-18, River Run 21% Protein, River Run HI-NRG 24-20, River Run Hi-Pro No-Soy, and Marksman Dog Food (28/18, 24/20, or 20/10 formulas).
  2. Verify the weight of your product, as affected bags include 40 LB (18.14 kg) and 50 LB (22.67 kg) sizes.
  3. Stop feeding the recalled food to your pets immediately even if they do not appear ill.
  4. Return any unused portions of the recalled dog food to the retail store where it was purchased for a full refund.
  5. Monitor your pet for symptoms such as sluggishness, vomiting, or a yellowish tint to the eyes and skin, and contact a veterinarian immediately if these signs appear.
  6. Contact the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator for your state or call the FDA's general veterinary helpline at 1-888-463-6332 for more information.
