Summary

Cargill Animal Nutrition is recalling 620 bags of Showmaster S-Series Show Lamb Feed (BW) because the feed contains dangerously high levels of molybdenum. The product was manufactured with an incorrect concentration of sodium molybdate, which can lead to toxicity in lambs. These 50-lb bags were distributed to retail feed stores in Washington and Idaho in early 2013. If you have this feed, you should stop using it immediately and return it to the retail store where it was purchased for a full refund.

Risk

Excessive molybdenum (sodium molybdate) in sheep feed is toxic and can cause severe health issues or death by interfering with copper absorption, leading to a condition known as molybdenosis or secondary copper deficiency.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the packaging for 'Showmaster S-Series Show Lamb Feed (BW)' in 50 lb bags with UPC 7 22304 28992 8.
  2. Verify the lot code printed on the bag to see if it matches 38306326464, 38306726610, or 38307426757.
  3. If the lot code begins with '38-3-063', '38-3-067', or '38-3-074', stop using the feed immediately to prevent molybdenum toxicity in your animals.
  4. Return any affected bags of feed to the retail feed store where they were purchased for a full refund or contact Cargill Animal Nutrition for further instructions.
  5. If you suspect your animals have been harmed by this feed, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  6. For additional questions regarding this recall, contact the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine at 240-402-7002.
