BMW of North America, LLC: Various BMW Vehicles Recalled for Camshaft Timing Bolts

Summary

BMW is recalling approximately 157,796 vehicles, including various models from the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and Z4 lineups produced between 2010 and 2012. The aluminum bolts securing the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit can loosen or break over time. Owners can have these bolts replaced by a dealer at no cost to ensure the engine functions correctly.

Risk

If these bolts loosen or break, it can cause the engine to stall suddenly while driving. An engine stall increases the risk of a crash and loss of vehicle control.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is one of the affected models: 2010-2012 1 Series Coupe or Convertible; 2010-2012 3 Series Sedan or Convertible; 2010-2011 3 Series Sportswagon or Coupe; 2010-2011 5 Series Sedan; 2010-2011 X3 xDrive 28i or 30i; 2010-2011 X5 xDrive30i; or 2010-2011 Z4 sDrive30i.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a service appointment for a free replacement of the four VANOS bolts.
  3. If you have already received an owner notification letter (mailed around June 19, 2024), follow the specific instructions provided by BMW.
  4. For additional information, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  5. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for further details.
