Summary

Bush Hog is recalling about 500 Zero Turn Radius (ZTR) HDE riding lawn mowers because the mower blade can detach from the spindle during operation. These mowers are black with gray wheels and a gray rollover protection structure, and were sold at dealers nationwide between February and September 2017. Owners should immediately stop using the recalled mowers and contact an authorized dealer for a free repair to replace the blade fastening hardware. Two incidents of the blade detaching have been reported during demonstrations, though no injuries have occurred.

Risk

The mower blade can separate from the spindle while the machine is running, creating a serious risk of laceration or impact injuries to the person operating the mower or anyone standing nearby.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the Bush Hog HDE riding lawn mower until it has been inspected and repaired.
  2. Check the left side of the mower beneath the seat for the 'HDE' model designation and the right rear frame underneath the fender for the identification plate.
  3. Identify the 15-digit serial number on the identification plate. The mower is affected if digits 9 through 11 represent a date code between 001 and 216 (which corresponds to manufacture dates from January 1 through August 4, 2017).
  4. Examine the bolt fastening the blade to the spindle; if the bolt is yellow, the unit has already been repaired and is not part of this recall.
  5. Contact an authorized Bush Hog dealer to schedule a free repair of the blade attachment mechanism.
  6. For more information or to find a dealer, call Bush Hog toll-free at 877-873-0145 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.bushhog.com and click on 'Safety Recall'.
