Burley Design Recalls Child Bicycle Trailers Due to Injury Risk

Summary

Burley Design has recalled approximately 34,000 child bicycle trailers from seven different models including the Cub, D'Lite, Encore, and Solo series manufactured between 2009 and 2015. The black plastic tow bar receiver on these trailers can fail, causing the trailer to detach from the bicycle while in motion. There have been 35 reports of these trailers separating from tow bars, including two incidents that caused abrasions to a child. Consumers should immediately stop using these trailers and contact Burley for a free safety strap kit and potential replacement parts.

Risk

The black plastic tow bar receiver can separate from the tow bar even when it appears to be securely connected. This can cause the trailer to detach unexpectedly during a ride, posing a significant crash hazard to children inside the trailer.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled bicycle trailer for towing children until it has been repaired.
  2. Locate the serial number on a sticker in the rear cargo area behind the seat, found on the left inside frame bar.
  3. Check the first four characters of the serial number to see if it matches these recalled codes: K943 (Cub/Rental Cub), D948 or K948 (D'Lite/D'Lite ST), K942 (Encore), or D939, K939, or KK939 (Solo/Solo ST).
  4. Inspect the tow bar receiver on the front left side of the trailer; this recall only affects trailers with a black plastic receiver with an integrated wheel guard. Trailers with aluminum receivers are safe to use.
  5. Contact Burley Design at 800-311-5294 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or visit www.burley.com and click on 'Recall Information' to request a free safety strap kit with tools and instructions.
  6. Examine the black plastic receiver for any cracks or damage; if any are found, request a free replacement tow bar receiver when contacting Burley.
  7. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this safety recall.

Your Remedy Options

🔧Free Repair

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycle trailers and contact Burley for a free safety strap kit with tools and instructions for installation and a coupon for a 20 percent discount on the purchase of any Burley accessory. Consumers should also inspect the black plastic tow bar receiver. If it appears to be cracked or damaged, consumers should also request a free replacement tow bar receiver.
